When Christians see the events in Paris, where 129 people were killed and so many more injured, where Islamic terrorists believed they were obeying their god, we are reminded that this world is not ultimately our home. We are also reminded of the devastation and the deceptive power of sin, and we remember that God is still Sovereign in this world. The names of every soul that perished that horrible night are known by Him. Knowing these things (and believing them with all of my heart) helps me, comforts me, and strengthens me as I move through this life.
For many people, they see Christianity and Jesus as a “crutch”. Jesus is just a “mechanism” to help Christians cope with life. To those people I say that not only is that true, but I embrace it. It is not a weakness to understand you are broken and need help. In fact, its smart. However, I will go even further. Jesus is not only my crutch to help me stand in difficult times, but He is also the neck brace that keeps my head up when I’m depressed. He is my glasses to help me see through eyes of faith, and He is the Great Physician that reveals the cancer of sin in my life and provides the righteousness I need to replace it and make me complete.
More and more everyday we are reminded that the god of this world is at work to steal, kill and destroy. In all of the chaos, remember that Jesus has come to give life, and to give it more abundantly. Run to the only One who can heal your broken heart. It’s not weakness, it just smart.
